Native American Elders tell us of people who are gifted among all beings because they carry two spirits, that of male and female. A direct translation of the Ojibwe term, Niizh manidoowag, "two-spirited" or "two-spirit" indicates a person whose body simultaneously houses a masculine spirit and a feminine spirit.
In some pre colonial African Communities, the Earth is seen as a very delicate machine or consciousness with high vibrational points, which certain people must be guardians of in order for the community to keep its continuity with the gods and spirits that dwell there. Any person who possesses both a masculine vibration and a feminine vibration is at a link (portal) between this world and the other world, and experiences a state of vibrational consciousness which is far higher and different from the one that a person with one vibration would experience. These unique individuals are called “The Gatekeepers”.
Two basic vibrations form all reality; these vibrations are the beginning threads that form all existence. We usually refer to these vibrations as Yin and Yang. In the cycle of life, the Female is the physical representation of Yin and the Male Yang. In most humans, the spirit or soul embodies one of these vibrations in the male Yang and in the female Yin. There are some individuals whose spirit embodies both Yin and Yang simultaneously. These individuals we refer to as Two Spirited or Gatekeepers.
